Fly Fishing Workshop

May 21 - 23, 2010
Riverside Bible Camp
On the Tomorrow River

If you would like to gain a solid foundation in the essential elements of successful fly fishing, this school is a great opportunity. Whether you are just starting out, or feel that you could use some serious coaching from people who are "in the know", our team of instructors is prepared to offer you the knowledge they've gleaned from years of experience.

The school will cover the following key areas:

  • Reading the stream: A field tour will explain where fish usually lie at various times and why.
  • Trout Unlimited's role in stream improvement: How we create prime habitat and favorable holding cover.
  • A basic primer on entomology: Stream samples will give you a close-up view of a trout's diet.
  • Fly basics: How to imitate the trout's diet using dry flies, nymphs and streamers.
  • Gear selection and set-up: How to choose the rod, reel, line, backing and leader for your intended use and how to properly assemble the system.
  • Casting instruction: Guidance in correctly performing the standard overhead cast and roll cast.
  • Fly tying: Hands on introduction to fly tying techniques, tools and materials.

“Exceeded my expectations. I much appreciate the thorough instruction I received. I now tie flies, and fish take them!”

Jason Elgin

The 2010 Fly Fishing School continues to be a two day event on May 21 - 23, at the Riverside Bible Camp in rural Amherst on the banks of the beautiful Tomorrow River. The Bible Camp offers several cabins and dormitory lodging in a rustic setting. Two nights lodging is included in the registration fee, but you may also commute.  This will be an alcohol and smoke free event. Early check in will be available between 7 and 8 PM Friday evening, followed by leader construction and study of knots useful to the fisherman. Check-in will be between 8 and 9 AM Saturday, prior to class start at 9 AM. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided on Saturday, breakfast and lunch on Sunday. Fly rod and/or waders are available if necessary, but feel free to bring your own gear. Tying vises and materials are provided for Saturday evening’s fly tying session. Students are welcome to join an instructor for an afternoon of guided fishing on the Tomorrow River or another of the area streams Sunday afternoon. You will need to provide a valid Wisconsin fishing license and trout stamp if you participate in this activity.
